Frequently Asked Questions

What is Signature Crypton® Carpet?
Signature Crypton® Carpet has created a new category of high-performance carpets that offer limitless options with superior stain and soil protection. The same stain-resistant Crypton® Advanced Technologies that have been installed in restaurants, hotels, assisted living homes, colleges and government facilities worldwide for seventeen (17) years is now available in carpet.
How is Signature Crypton® Carpet made?
Signature Crypton® Carpet begins with the formulation if patented chemistry that imparts permanent resistance to spills, odors and stains. These formulas are developed by combining a variety of active ingredients that are screened for environmental and human health concerns. The carpets are then processed through a series of baths and ovens that encapsulate each and every fiber. Sophisticated process controls and lab testing ensure consistent, first quality results.
Why do I need Crypton®?
It is important that the materials and products that you specify maintain their beauty. So it makes sense to select a Signature Crypton® Carpet that repels spills, resist odors, mold, and mildew with a guaranteed moisture barrier. Crypton® protects both your design intent and the end-user’s carpet investment. The same chemistry has proven effective in upholstered furnishings, with over 60 million yards proven in the field. Crypton® provides unparalleled assurance that you are making the right choice, not only for today but for years to come.
Is there Vinyl in Signature Crypton® Carpet?
No, there are no plasticizers found in our chemistry or backings. Our backing process with BioCel technology is far more advanced than similar extruded backing systems found in our industry.
How does Signature Crypton® Carpet feel?
Just like any other beautiful carpet and it is offered in numerous textures, patterns, and colors.
Is Signature Crypton® Carpet covered by a warranty?
Yes, a limited life-time warranty on all acid based stains.
Is Signature Crypton® Carpet impermeable to liquids?
Yes, to simulate wet spills, the British Spill Test measures the penetration of a dyed water solution through the carpet product over a 24-hour period. A specified liquid amount is poured from the height of one (1) meter through a funnel onto the carpet face, where it is contained in a concentrated area for 24 hours. The carpet is then evaluated for liquid penetration through the product. Results are reported as pass or fail. Signature Crypton® Carpet polyurethane carpet backings, BioCel, is designed to meet and exceed the requirements for a pass rating under this protocol.
Does Signature Crypton® Carpet inhibit the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria?
Yes, during the bathing and backing process, Signature Crypton® Carpet is treated with an EPA approved broad spectrum anti-microbial, proven effective against both gram positive and gram negative micro-organisms which may contribute to odor.
How easily can Signature Crypton® Carpet be cleaned?
Signature Crypton® Carpet is easily cleanable with water and an enzyme-based detergent like Tide® or Cheer®. However, our Crypton® Care cleaners make clean-up even faster and easier. These ready-to-use cleaners are non-toxic, pH-neutral and work on any water-cleanable textile. They remove nearly any stain imaginable, including grease, grass, wine, and crayons.
Is Signature Crypton® Carpet's BioCel backing system really 70% recycled content?
Yes, BioCel combines the exceptional performance characteristics of polyurethane carpet backing with an unprecedented degree of environmental sustainability. BioCel is third party certified to be approximately 70% green by weight. The three recycled components are:

  • Rapidly Renewable Resources
BioCel replaces a portion of the petroleum-based polymers necessary to produce polyurethane backing with bio-based polyols made from domestic grown soybean plants.
  • Recovered/Reclaimed Resources
BioCel also contains Celceram®, a highly refined mineral compound that is recovered from the process of coal combustion in an electrical utility power plant. The ingredients in Celceram are carefully selected and processed for their component and performance characteristics. Celceram’s unique chemical properties strengthen and stabilize the polyurethane compound, improving performance over conventional carpet backings.
  • Post Consumer Resources
BioCel is finished with a non-woven secondary.

Does BioCel contribute to LEED?
Yes, Signature Crypton® Carpet products may be used in conjunction with other qualified building materials to help meet LEED criteria. Signature Crypton® Carpet products contribute to the following LEED credits:

Materials and Resources

2.1 — Construction Waste Management
1 point if 50% of waste is diverted from landfill. Through C.A.R.E. carpet reclamation program, Signature Crypton® Carpet can reclaim replaced carpet and carpet installation waste and divert it from landfill.

4.1 — Recycled Content (RC)
1 point if post-consumer recycled content and half of pre-consumer (post-industrial) recycled content equals at least 10% of the total value of ALL materials used in the project. Carpet alone does NOT qualify for a point but will contribute to a point.

  • Post-consumer recycled content: PET
  • Pre-consumer (post industrial) recycled content: Celceram

4.3 — Low Emitting Materials – Carpet
1 point if all carpet installed in the building meets the Carpet and Rug Institute’s (CRI) Indoor Air Quality Test

  • CRI Green Label – LEED NC v2.1
  • CRI Green Label Plus – LEED NC v2.2, LEED CI, and LEED EB
  • All Signature Crypton® Carpet meet this credit with the BioCel Laminate Backing

6.0 — Rapidly Renewable Materials
1 point if rapidly renewable materials make up 5% of the total value of ALL materials used in the project. BioCel Laminate is made using polyols extracted from soybeans which is rapidly renewable. This accounts for 5-7% of the total weight, depending on the style.
